The Best Non-Toxic Perfume Brands (And Better, Low-Tox Options)
WRITTEN BY: TESS • October 7, 2025
Most perfumes are filled with hidden chemicals—but finding a truly non-toxic perfume is way harder than it should be.
The short answer? Yes, non-toxic perfumes do exist. But after months of researching cleaner, low-tox fragrance options, I realized something frustrating: a lot of brands that claim to be “clean”… aren’t.
Between vague ingredient lists, hidden “fragrance” blends, and greenwashing labels (I’m looking at you, “clean” beauty), it gets confusing fast.
An example of this is the “clean at Sephora” label. I used to shop perfumes with this label thinking it meant the product was free from all harmful additives—but that’s not exactly the case. Fragrances with this label are free from common offenders such as phthalates, triclosan, and formaldehyde-releasers, but they still allow other synthetic ingredients that can potentially affect your health.
So I did the digging for you. Here are my top non-toxic and low-tox perfume brands that are actually worth it (and what to look for before you buy).
What is non-toxic perfume?
It’s important to note that there is no legal certification or definition of what a ‘non-toxic perfume’ is but generally it’s a better, cleaner scent option that is free from harmful additives, does not use synthetic fragrance, and uses natural and organic ingredients instead.
Not only are they better for you, but they’re also an eco-friendly choice since many non-toxic brands focus on sustainable practices, cruelty-free production, and recyclable packaging.
Also, natural fragrances can be a little different than what conventional fragrances. They may not last as long on the skin, or be as overpowering as conventional scents (which isn’t a bad thing IMO).
Why choose a non-toxic perfume?
Have you ever walked by someone on the street and felt suffocated by their strong fragrance? Watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, headaches… there’s a reason most public spaces are now scent-free areas. Synthetic fragrances are irritating to the body.
Most commercial perfumes, colognes, and body mists are a concoction of hundreds to thousands of synthetic chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and artificial colorants—ingredients that can cause a variety of unwanted symptoms such as skin irritation, headaches, allergies and, over time, can disrupt your hormones and affect your overall well-being.
Non-toxic perfumes and colognes are typically made from natural ingredients, without synthetic fragrance or commonly concerning additives—so you can enjoy a nice scent without unnecessary exposure.
So, what exactly is fragrance?
I was pretty shocked when I found out my favourite vanilla perfume was not just a handful of ingredients but actually a mixture of dozens to hundreds of hidden chemical ingredients.
The part that gets muddled is that companies are legally allowed to not disclose all of their ingredients used in the creation of their scents because it’s considered a “trade secret” by the US Food and Drug Administration. So, when you’re buying perfume, a brand legally does not have to let the consumer (you) know which chemical ingredients were used.
Most companies use synthetic fragrances because they’re cheap, easy to replicate (make thousands of the same perfume), and they’re easy to work with.
Fragrance can also be listed under different names such as:
- parfum
- perfume
- musk
- eau de parfum
- aroma
- cologne
- natural fragrance
Impact on health
Because companies are not legally required to list each and every single chemical ingredient used in their formulations, it’s really difficult to gauge the full extent of how the fragrance can impact our health.
However, many fragrance ingredients have been identified as known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, developmental and neurotoxins, and allergens.
What about ‘safe synthetics’?
Because many are looking for healthier fragrance options, a lot of brands are switching to using ‘safe-synthetics’. Many fragrances listed under the ‘clean at Sephora’ label use safe synthetics.
Safe synthetics are lab-made scents that are made without harmful chemicals such as phthalates and parabens.
I’m seeing a lot of brands using safe synthetics now, probably in part to appeal to those looking for a healthier fragrance option. Using the greenwashing terms clean and natural also helps them increase sales.
Are safe synthetics better than conventional fragrances? Yes. Are they completely toxin-free? Unlikely.
I do think they are an upgrade from traditional fragrances but there are some brands that go a step further and completely omit the use of synthetic ingredients making their ingredient formulas transparent.
My criteria for choosing safer scents
When looking for a safer fragrance I look for these things:
- use a non-denatured alcohol base
- 100% natural and botanical derived ingredients
- complete ingredient transparency
If a brand is not transparent about their ingredient list they are an immediate no from me.
So after months of research (and a lot of trial and error), here are my top picks.

Their fragrances are natural, made with organic ingredients and free from harmful additives such as phthalates and petrochemicals. I love that they are fully transparent with the ingredient list for each scent. They offer 17 scent options.

Lavanila

For those who love sweet scents but want to avoid synthetic ingredients, Lavanila offers a lovely collection of low-tox perfumes. Their formulations are free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, artificial colorants, and petrochemicals. Using natural ingredients like vanilla, lavender, and other essential oils, their perfumes smell indulgent without being overwhelming.
They are committed to ingredient transparency and using safe, natural ingredients. Aside from pure essential oils, their ‘botanical fragrance blend’ includes nature identical oils which are still synthetic molecules which is why I would classify their perfumes as ‘low-tox”.
More ‘better-for-you’ perfume brands
Lastly, here are a couple of popular perfume brands I’d consider safer than conventional options but not clean enough to include in the lists above. Most of these brands include some synthetic ingredients which is why I wouldn’t label them as ‘best’, but they are transparent about their ingredients and omit harmful chemicals such as phthalates.
- Phlur (scents created from safe synthetics)
- DIME (use organic sugar cane alcohol and safe synthetics. Their 7 Summers perfume is EWG verified.
- Skylar (use certified organic sugar cane alcohol but their scents are all created from safe-synthetics).
- Henry Rose (EWG verified. They use organic sugar cane alcohol base and a mix of safe synthetics and biotechnology derived ingredients)
- By Rosie Jane (better-for-you perfumes. They use an organic denatured alcohol base and safe synthetics)
- Heretic Parfum (use organic sugarcane alcohol and a combination of botanicals, safe synthetics, and naturally derived ingredients)
- The 7 Virtues (use denatured organic sugarcane alcohol and a blend of sustainably sourced oils and safe synthetics)
- Strange Invisible (use certified organic grape alcohol, essential oils, and natural botanicals which is great, but they don’t disclose their ingredient list so it’s hard to verify how clean it is).
